Land management

The High Weald is a working landscape, with a rich farming history that has shaped the area into the beautiful and much-loved protected landscape we know today.

Its characteristic patchwork of fields, woods and waterways requires regular maintenance by farmers and land managers. Without traditional management, wildlife species depending on grassland, heathland and working woodland suffer.

If you own or manage buildings and land in the Kent, Sussex or Surrey High Weald, your decisions are likely to have an impact on this precious landscape.

This section contains advice and guidance for managing a range of special habitats, and details of how we can support you in conserving and enhancing your corner of the High Weald AONB.

Regenerative agriculture

Did you know that there are more soil microorganisms – in the form of fungi, bacteria, and soil microbes  – living in a teaspoon of healthy soil than there are people on the earth?

Regenerative agriculture is a system of farming and land management that works with nature rather than against it.

This approach works from the ground up, improving soil health to combat climate change, flooding and a host of other environmental challenges.

We are helping a growing number of farmers in the High Weald AONB move over to regenerative farming methods with advice, training and grant funding – come and join us!
