Research purpose:
Field systems are a key character component of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area’s distinctive pattern of small, irregular fields has remained largely unchanged for the last 700 years. This project was designed to identify and conserve our most historically-significant fields – particularly in countryside facing considerable change through development or agricultural modification. The work adds to our knowledge of pre-medieval field systems surviving in the present day landscape.
Research aims:
• To produce guidance designed to help identify and conserve the most important fields in the High Weald in line with the purpose of AONB designation.
Outputs:
A draft High Weald field and boundaries character statement has been produced, together with a method of assessment and supporting video and web-based information.
